Can a Hoyer Lift be Used by One Person?
If you’re caring for a loved one with mobility limitations, a Hoyer lift can be a tremendous help by providing a means to transition someone safely and comfortably from bed to chair, chair to bath, or chair to couch. Also called ceiling lifts, these mobility aids come in a wide array of configurations, from portable units that can be moved from room to room, to fixed models in which the sling glides on ceiling-mounted tracts from one location to another.
At the Barrier Free Store, we offer Hoyer lifts from two of the most respected manufacturers in the business, Prism Medical and Handicare. As a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) serving residents throughout the Upper Peninsula, many of our customers are retired couples living in two-person households. As such, one of the first questions asked by someone who is considering the purchase of a Hoyer lift is whether or not it can be used by one person. While every situation is unique, in most cases the answer is yes.
Built for Easy Access
The Hoyer lifts we offer at the Barrier Free Store are fully mechanized and designed to be used by one person. Boasting powerful electric motors and pushbutton controls, our models have lifting capacities of up to 625 pounds. With their large lifting areas, smooth hoisting and lowering motions, and sturdy construction, ceiling lifts are exceptionally stable. You will never have to worry about excessive swinging or swaying during transport. In fact, the most challenging part of using a lift is often positing the sling under the occupant, but as long as you can roll your loved one from their back to their side (if they can’t do so on their own), you should have no issues using it. If, however, you are unable to properly position the sling by yourself, you’ll need a second person there to help.
