What Is a Lift Chair?

Many mobility aids have the word “lift” in them, which can make it confusing when trying to sort through them all. Wheelchair lifts, stair lifts, and ceiling lifts are all common aging-in-place products that are designed to provide safe and reliable transportation for those with limited mobility. Lift chairs are another popular option for those who have difficulty getting into and out of a chair. But what, exactly, is a lift chair? The simple answer: a motorized recliner.

In appearance, lift chairs look like a premium recliner, with one exception. There’s no lever to extend the footrest. Instead, motorized lift chairs transition from position to position with the push of a button. But their enhanced functionality goes beyond simply reclining the seatback and extending the footrest. Lift chairs also have the ability to tilt the back and seat forward until they are nearly vertical, thus allowing for entry and exit from a standing position.

What’s in a Name?

To make the terminology even more confusing, lift chairs go by many different names. Depending on the manufacturer, they may be referred to as power recliners, pop-up chairs, three-position recliners, and infinite position recliners. All of these terms refer to the same thing. That’s not to say there aren’t differences between the various brands and models. Options include:

  • A wide variety of upholsteries
  • Heating and massage settings
  • Full horizontal reclining for sleeping
  • Bariatric models with increased lifting capacities
  • Numerous built-in storage options for cups, mugs, books, and remotes

Who Can Benefit From a Lift Chair?

Lift chairs are great options, not only for seniors with mobility limitations, but also for those recuperating from surgery or recovering from an injury. In fact, many back-surgery patients find sleeping in a recliner to be much more comfortable than a bed. For those who need a power recliner for only a few months, rental options are often available.

“My dad’s strength deteriorated over a short period of time due to medicines he needed to take. Your company provided prompt service. We most appreciated the person who had the foresight to have a stair lift in stock because my dad basically needed an emergency installation for his safety and mine, so we could safely get upstairs. Thank you to everyone for your kindness and quick assistance at a difficult time. My dad loves the lift!”
