Will the VA Pay for a Stair Lift?

For homeowners who are aging in place, having a stair lift installed can help ensure continued independence for many years to come. By providing a safe, reliable, and comfortable means of accessing upper and lower floors, these devices ensure homes remain as accessible as possible for those with reduced or limited mobility.

But while the benefits of stair lifts are plentiful, their price may give some homeowners pause. Lifts can range from a few thousand to over ten thousand dollars depending on the model and stair configuration. There are, however, several options available to help mitigate the costs of a new lift. If you’re a U.S. military veteran, the Veteran’s Administration may pay the entire cost if your need for a stair lift is the result of an injury sustained while on active duty. If your need is not the result of an active-duty injury, the VA Aid and Attendance benefit may still provide funds under certain circumstances. You must be eligible for a pension to qualify. The Veterans Directed Home and Community Based Services (VD-HCBS) may also pay for products or services that improve a veteran’s ability to live independently. All enrollees are eligible. This program is only available in certain states however.

“My dad’s strength deteriorated over a short period of time due to medicines he needed to take. Your company provided prompt service. We most appreciated the person who had the foresight to have a stair lift in stock because my dad basically needed an emergency installation for his safety and mine, so we could safely get upstairs.
